Ivory White Shea Butter from Ghana
Raw Shea Butter is extracted from nuts of the Karite tree, found in Central and West Africa. It generally takes 25 to 30 years for a Karite tree (Shea tree) to produce nuts that contain a substantial volume of fatty acids that make up Shea Butter and supply its unique and beneficial properties.
Shea Butter is easily absorbed by the skin and provides nourishment to the skin due to the Vitamin A, Vitamin E and Vitamin F of which it contains. Unsaponifiable fat is found in Raw Shea Butter at levels higher than most other vegetable-based butters (up to 12%). Raw Shea Butter also contains high levels of Cinnamic Acid which acts as a natural sunscreen (nearly equivalent to SPF 4).
There are many benefits to the skin when applying Raw Shea Butter as a daily moisturizer to the face and body. Benefits include: softening of tough skin on the heels and elbows, stretch mark prevention during pregnancy, restores elasticity to the skin, soothes skin, provides some relief after sunburn, and gives skin a healthy and beautiful appearance due to its moisturizing and vitamin enriching abilities.
There are several steps in the production of Raw African Shea Butter in the small, traditional processing facilities. Citrus Moon's imported Raw African Shea Butter is produced in a small, traditional processing facility. The steps to producing Raw Shea Butter are as follows:
- African villagers pick fallen Shea nuts from the ground beneath Karite trees (Ghana).
- Bad nuts are culled by hand.
- Shea nuts are removed of their soft pulp outer layer.
- The de-pulped nuts are boiled and allowed to dry in the sun.
- The nuts are then de-husked to remove the shell.
- Another step of sun-drying.
- At this point, Shea nuts go into storage until it’s time to further process.
- Then, nuts are pounded and crushed into grits.
- Shea nuts are roasted or grilled to aid in oil extraction.
- Now the nuts are ground up in to a paste.
- The paste is mixed with water and kneading takes place.
- The resulting emulsion is boiled.
- Separation occurs and the fat (Raw Shea) is skimmed off.
- The skimmed fat is then allowed to cool thus producing Raw Shea Butter. Note that there is no significant difference between Raw Shea Butter that is Golden Yellow or Ivory White. The resulting color is determined by the boiling process. The ivory-white color is produced by allowing Shea to boil for additional time. Some people prefer Ivory over Golden because it is less apt to stain fabrics.
