Bentonite Clay is formed when volcanic ash mixes with water. Large deposits of Bentonite can be found across the western United States in Montana, Wyoming, and Nevada. Deposits of Bentonite Clay can also be found in Maine. This volcanic clay contains a large concentration of natural minerals including calcium, magnesium, sodium, aluminum and silicon. It is also known as Montmorillonite, named after Montmorillon, France where this type of clay was first discovered.

Bentonite can be used externally as a mud pack, in the bath, and in skin care recipes. When Bentonite is mixed with water, it rapidly swells open like a highly porous sponge. During this process, toxins are drawn from the skin into the clay and once there, they are bound. It’s this absorptive process that makes Bentonite clay great for oily skin and especially great for individuals suffering from acne.

External Usage: We suggest using 2 to 3 ounces of Bentonite Clay when adding it to bath water. To make a facial mask, mix Bentonite to a ratio of 1-part clay to 3-parts water, or until you reach a desired consistency. Typical usage would be 2-3 times per week but individuals with oily skin or those suffering from acne may use Bentonite Clay 3-4 times per week.
